Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, born in Puerto Rico in 1874, dedicated his life to disproving the claim that Black people lacked history and heroes. In 1926, the New York Public Library bought his collection of 10,000 documents and artifacts about Africa and its diaspora from him. As the library's curator, he made a huge impact by diligently preserving the rich heritage and history of the Black community. He died June 8, 1938, and is buried in Brooklyn. Today a branch of the library is named after him.
